Frequently asked questions
Practical how-do-I answers. For the philosophy behind the tool - what the tags mean, why we show gaps instead of guessing - see How this works.
Finder is for browsing and comparing individual feeds side by side, with filters, sorting, and a full nutrient breakdown per feed. Builder is for combining several feeds into a full daily diet and seeing the combined totals - what the mix actually delivers, not just what one bag says.
It means the manufacturer hasn't published that value - we show the gap rather than guessing or treating it as zero. See "Not declared - and why we show it" on the How this works page for the full reasoning.
Website is the default - values exactly as the brand publishes them, not independently tested. Lab verified means the manufacturer has sent us their own batch lab-test results for that feed (the card notes which values the test actually covered). Feedipedia means the figures come from an independent published nutrition reference database, used mainly for raw base ingredients like wheat bran that don't have their own manufacturer page.
Tick "Compare" on up to four feed cards in the Finder, then open the compare tray at the bottom of the screen to see them side by side.
NSC (non-structural carbohydrate) is generally WSC + Starch. Where a brand publishes NSC directly, that's exactly what's shown. Where they haven't, but both WSC and starch are declared, the Builder adds them together and labels the result calculated - not declared so it's never mistaken for the manufacturer's own figure. The Finder card always shows NSC exactly as declared - it never does this calculation on the card itself, only in the Builder's diet totals.
Standalone oils (flaxseed oil, rice bran oil, etc.) are fed by the syringe or capful, not the scale - the Builder switches those specific products to mL automatically, converted internally using an approximate oil density. It only applies to products flagged as an oil in our data, never to a regular hard feed that happens to contain some oil as one ingredient among many.
It means only some of the feeds in your diet declare that nutrient, so the true total is unknowable - the number shown is a floor (the real total is at least this much), never a number dressed up to look complete. Tap "which feeds?" to see exactly which products are missing that value.
These are the two mineral ratios this tool will flag if they're badly skewed, because the science on their real physiological consequences is well established. It's a deliberate, narrow exception - everywhere else, the tool shows numbers without judging them. The flag only appears when every feed in the diet declares both minerals as real numbers.
Yes - use the "Sort by" dropdown above the results grid in the Finder to sort by DE, NSC, sugar, starch, protein, fat or fibre, low-to-high or high-to-low. Feeds that don't declare the chosen field always sort to the end, regardless of direction.
No - browsing, filtering, comparing and building a diet are all free to use without an account. You only need to sign in to save a diet to a horse.
Saving is tied to your own horse records, which are private to you - an account is how the tool knows which diets belong to which horse, and keeps that data behind your login rather than open to anyone.
Optional tags (metabolic, ulcers, tying up, PSSM, grain intolerant, and others) you can set on a horse. If a diet you've loaded for that horse crosses a general guideline for one of those flags, the Builder shows a soft "worth checking" note - never a block, and never a diagnosis. Always confirm with an equine nutritionist for that horse's specific needs.
Yes - each horse has its own diet library. You can mark one diet as the horse's "current" diet, and keep others saved alongside it.
The Builder shows a live comparison against what you saved - if the feed data has changed since, or you've since adjusted amounts, you'll see exactly what's different before you save again.
Enter your name and email on the sign-in page - there's no password. You'll get an email with a one-time link; click it and you're in.
Open the account menu (top right, once signed in) - if your name isn't set, you'll see a field to add it there.
Open the account menu and choose "Delete account." This permanently removes your account, your horses, and your saved diets - it can't be undone.
Both are linked in the footer of every page: Privacy Policy and Terms of Use.
No. Equipedia totals manufacturer-declared values and shows you the gaps - it doesn't assess whether a diet meets your horse's requirements, and it isn't measured against NRC or any nutritional standard. Always confirm real feeding decisions with your vet or an equine nutritionist.
Every record is checked directly against the manufacturer's own published listing on a stated date. See How this works for the full explanation of source tiers and what each one means.
